Front Loaders

To test the drain pump assembly in your front loader Maytag washing machine, follow the steps below…

Step 1. In order to prevent electrocution, it is advised that you disconnect your washer from the outlet before starting this repair.

Step 2. Using a Torx screwdriver, loosen the nuts holding the lower access panel to the front of the cabinet. Pry the panel off the washer and set it aside.

Step 3. Place a container underneath the pump filter. Turn the filter knob and pull it out. Once all the water has drained out into the container, put the filter back in.

Step 4. Pry the cap off the drain pump and disconnect the wire harness from the terminal. Use pliers to release the spring clamps holding the sump hose and outlet hose to the pump.

Step 7. If the reading is much lower or higher than this number, the pump is damaged and needs to be replaced. If the pump is in good condition, reinstall it in the cabinet and apply the bolts using your 5/16 inch nut-driver.

Step 8. Plug the wire connector back into the pump assembly, then snap the cap on. Reconnect each of the outlet hoses to the ports on the drain pump, then use pliers to move the retaining clamps into place.

Step 9. Snap the lower front access panel onto the machine, then apply the nuts using your Torx screwdriver. Plug your washing machine back into the electrical outlet.

If your Maytag washing machine cycles don’t change, it indicates an issue with the shift actuator, before concluding that the part is damaged, you should check to ensure that the connector is properly attached. Here’s how to do this…

Step 1. Disconnect your washing machine from the outlet and turn the water faucets off before starting this repair in order to prevent leaks and electrocution.

Step 2. Spread a towel on the floor underneath the water supply hoses to catch any leaks. Disconnect the water supply hoses from the ports at the back of the washer.

Step 3. Use pliers to release the retaining clamp holding the drain hose to the port a the washer. Detach the hose from the cabinet.

Step 4. Place some tape on the lid of your washer to help secure it. With someone helping you if needed, tip your washing machine backwards carefully and set it on the floor.

Step 5. Use a 5/16 inch nut-driver to loosen the screws holding the belt guard to the bottom of the tub. Take the guard off and set it aside.

Step 6. Inspect the wire connector attached to the shift actuator at the bottom of the tub and ensure it is properly connected.

Step 7. Put the belt guard back in place and apply the nuts using a 5/16 inch nut-driver. Carefully lift the washing machine back onto its feet and peel the tape off the lid.

Step 9. Reconnect the COLD and HOT water supply hoses to the ports at the back of the machine.
