1. Damaged Transmission Assembly (Top Loaders)

Step 1. Before starting this repair, it is advised that you disconnect your machine from the electrical outlet and turn the water taps off.

Step 2. Place some tape on the lid of your washing machine to help secure it. Go to the back of your washer, then use pliers to disconnect the water supply hoses (keep a rag nearby in case water spills).

Step 3. With a 1/4 inch nut-driver, take out the nut at the back of the machine holding the wiring and tube guard. Take the panel off and set it aside.

Step 4. Use your nut-driver to loosen the screws holding the top panel to the cabinet. Carefully lift the top panel assembly, then support it against a wall or using a lanyard.

Step 5. Use a flat-blade screwdriver to help pry the cap off the agitator. Pry the tub cover off the tub assembly.

Step 6. Pull the lint filter out of the agitator. Loosen the bolt holding the agitator to the inner tub using a 7/16 inch socket wrench. Carefully lift the agitator out of the tub and set it aside.

Step 7. Using a hammer and a tub nut wrench, loosen the bolt holding the inner tub to the transmission shaft. Carefully lift the inner tub out of the cabinet and set it aside.

Step 8. Use your hammer to carefully knock the drive block off the transmission shaft. Lower the top panel back onto the cabinet, then use your 1/4 inch nut-driver to apply the screws.

Step 9. Pull your washing machine’s drain hose out of the home drain. Tip your washing machine forwards carefully and set it on the floor (if needed, get someone to help you).

Step 10. With a 5/16 inch nut-driver, take out the nuts holding the belt guard to the bottom of the machine. Take the belt guard off and set it aside.

Step 11. Take the drive belt off the motor pulley and transmission pulley. Disconnect the wire harness attached to the motor assembly.

Step 12. Loosen the bolts holding the drive motor to the transmission plate using a 10mm socket wrench. Carefully lift the motor off the plate and set it aside.

Step 13. Loosen the nut securing the shift actuator to the transmission assembly using your 1/4 inch nut-driver. Disconnect the wire harness attached to the actuator, then set it aside.

Step 14. Unplug the capacitor wire connector. Take out the bolts holding the capacitor to the plate using your nut-driver. Set the capacitor aside.

Step 15. With a 13mm socket, take out the bolt holding the pulley wheel to the transmission shaft. Take the pulley wheel off and set it aside.

Step 16. Pry the splutch housing off the shaft. Pull the basket drive gear and spring off the transmission shaft, then set them aside.

Step 17. Loosen the bolts holding the transmission assembly to the bottom of the outer tub using a 7/16 inch socket wrench. Carefully pull the transmission assembly out of the tub, then set it aside.

Step 18. Pull the old tub seal out of the opening at the bottom of the tub. Take your new washing machine transmission assembly out of its packaging.

Step 19. Mount the new transmission assembly on the outer tub, then secure it by applying the bolts with your 7/16 inch socket wrench.

Step 20. Place the spring and basket drive gear on the new transmission shaft. Snap the splutch housing onto the shaft.

Step 21. Place the pulley wheel on the shaft, then apply the 13mm bolt to secure it. Mount the capacitor and shift actuator on the transmission plate, then secure them by applying the screws with your 1/4 inch nut-driver.

Step 22. Plug the wire connectors back into the shift actuator and capacitor. Mount the drive motor on the transmission plate. Secure the motor by applying the bolt using your socket wrench.

Step 23. Plug the wire harness into the drive motor assembly. Loop the drive belt around the motor pulley and transmission pulley (ensure that the belt is turned with the grooved part facing inwards).

Step 24. Put the belt guard on the transmission assembly. Secure the guard by applying the 5/16 inch bolts.

Step 25. Carefully lift your washing machine onto its feet. Go to the back of the machine, then loosen the bolts holding the top panel using your 1/4 inch nut-driver.

Step 26. Lift the top panel and support it. Slide the drive block onto the new transmission shaft.

Step 27. Lower the inner tub onto the shaft. Secure the inner tub assembly by applying the tub nut.

Step 28. Place the agitator on the transmission shaft. Secure the agitator by applying the bolts using your 7/16 inch socket wrench.

Step 29. Put the lint filter back in the agitator, then snap the cap on. Snap the tub cover onto the assembly.

Step 30. Lower the top panel onto the cabinet, then apply the bolts at the back using your 1/4 inch nut-driver. Put the wiring and tube guard back in place, then apply the nut.

Step 31. Reinsert your washer’s drain hose into the standpipe. Reconnect the COLD and HOT water supply hoses to their corresponding ports at the back of the machine.

Step 32. Peel the tape off your washer’s lid. Turn the water supply taps back on, then plug the power cord into the electrical outlet. To ensure that the issue has been fixed, try running a wash cycle.

Step 7. Secure the door switch wires in the retainer on the bulkhead. Plug the door switch wires back into the front panel. Mount the front panel on the cabinet, then use your screwdriver to apply the bolts at the bottom.

Step 10. Prepare your new drum roller axle for installation by taking it out of its packaging. Mount the axle on the cabinet, then secure it by applying the bolts with your nut-driver.

Step 11. Slide the roller onto the new axle. Secure the roller by snapping the retaining ring on.

Step 12. Carefully lift the belt and drum, then guide them into the cabinet. Reach underneath the drum, then loop the drive belt around the motor pulley and idler pulley in a zig-zag formation.

Step 13. Remount the front bulkhead on the cabinet. Secure the bulkhead by applying the bolts with your 5/16 inch nut-driver.

Step 14. Plug the light assembly wires back in, then secure them in the retainers on the bulkhead.
