Do the following to replace the Start button in your GE washing machine…
Step 1. Make sure to turn off your washing machine’s water and power supply before attempting any repairs in order to avoid water leakage and electrocution.
Step 2. Run some wire around each of the control knobs and pull them off your washing machine.
Step 3. Use your screwdriver to take out the screws at the back of your washing machine’s control panel.
Step 4. Slide the control panel sideways a bit and detach it from the main control housing. Lay the panel flat on the washer’s main top.
Step 5. Use a 5/16 inch nut-driver to take out the screws holding the control board to the panel.
Step 6. Lift the control board out of the panel and set it aside.
Step 7. Pull the old Start button from the inside of the control panel to take it out.
Step 8. Get your new Start button out of its packaging and push it through the opening in the control panel.
Step 9. Put the control board back in place inside the panel and secure it by applying the nuts.

Do the following to replace the control board of your GE front loader washing machine…
Step 1. Make sure to turn off your washing machine’s power and water supply in order to avoid water leakage or electrical damage.
Step 2. Use your Philips screwdriver to take out the screws at the back of the washing machine holding the top panel.
Step 3. Slide the top panel backwards a bit and pull off the trim at the front of the top panel.
Step 4. Lift the panel up and set it aside.
Step 5. Pull out the soap dispenser of your washer and press the little lever inside the dispenser drawer to free it from the washing machine. Set the soap drawer aside.
Step 6. Use your Philips screwdriver to take out the screw next to the dispenser drawer housing on the control panel.
Step 7. Take out the four screws across the back of the console with a Philips screwdriver.
Step 8. Gently release the locking tabs at the top of the control panel.
Step 9. Reach behind the panel and release the tabs at the bottom of the panel.
Step 10. Disconnect each of the electrical connectors attached to the control board (take note of where each wire goes).

Step 13. Use a flat-blade screwdriver to release the three locking tabs securing the control board.

Step 16. Get your new control board out of its pack.
Step 17. Snap all the buttons in place on the new control board.
Step 18. Put the new control board in place on the control panel assembly and apply the Philips screws to secure it.
Step 19. Plug each electrical connector to its appropriate terminal on the new control board.
Step 20. Snap the control panel back in place and apply the screw beside the detergent drawer housing to secure it.
Step 21. Push the detergent drawer back in place.
Step 22. Use your screwdriver to apply the screws at the back of the control panel.
Step 23. Put the top panel on top of your washing machine and snap the trim piece back in place.
Step 24. Push the top panel forward in place and apply the screws on the panel to secure it.
