Whirlpool Washing Machine Stuck On Drain Cycle — How To Fix
Is your Whirlpool washing machine stuck on a drain cycle? The issue is most likely with the pump. If you have a front loader washing machine, the first thing you should do is open the pump filter and clean out any debris that may be blocking it.
If the issue still isn’t fixed after cleaning the pump filter, you need to test the pump itself to ensure it isn’t damaged. The steps below show you how to do this…
To test the drain pump assembly in your front loader Whirlpool washing machine, follow the steps below…
Step 1. Prevent any chances of electrical damage by disconnecting the machine from the electrical outlet before starting this procedure.
Step 2. With a 1/4 inch nut-driver, take out the three screws at the bottom of the lower front access panel. Pry the plate off the machine and set it aside.
Step 3. Place a container underneath the pump filter. Turn the filter knob, then let any water stuck in the drum drain out.
Step 4. Once all the water has drained out, put the pump filter back in the housing. Use a pair of pliers to squeeze the clamp holding the sump hose to the pump, then slide it out of place. Pull the hose off the pump, then repeat this process with the second hose.
Step 5. Reach into the cabinet, then use a flat-blade screwdriver to release the retaining tabs holding the pump assembly to the cabinet. Take the pump out of the machine.
Step 6. Pry the cap off the drain pump, then unplug the wire connectors attached to it. Get a multimeter, then set it to ohms.
Step 7. Place the probes of the multimeter on the pump terminals. For a working pump, you should be getting a reading of about 16. If the reading is much lower or higher than this number, the pump needs to be replaced.
Step 8. If you’ve determined that the pump is in good condition, reconnect the wire plugs, then snap the cap back on.
Step 9. Snap the pump assembly back into the cabinet. Reconnect the sump hose and outlet hose to the appropriate ports on the pump, then slide the retaining clamps into place to secure them.
Step 10. Remount the lower access panel onto the cabinet, then tighten the screws at the bottom using your 1/4 inch nut-driver. Reconnect the appliance to the electrical outlet.
To test the drain pump in your top loader Whirlpool washing machine, follow the steps below…
Step 1. Ensure that you disconnect your washing machine from the power supply, then turn the water taps off before starting this repair in order to prevent electrocution and water leaks.
Step 2. Disconnect the two water supply hoses from the ports at the back of the cabinet (we recommend keeping a rag nearby to clean any water leaks).
Step 3. With a pair of pliers, release the spring clamp securing the main drain hose to the back of the machine. Pull the hose off the port.
Step 4. Place some tape on the lid of the machine top help secure it. Carefully tip the washing machine backwards, then set it on the floor (if needed, get someone to assist you).
Step 5. Using pliers, squeeze the clamp holding the hose to the pump, then slide it out of place. Detach the hose from the pump (some water may spill out).
Step 6. Pry the cap off the pump assembly, then unplug the wire connector. Loosen the bolts holding the pump to the bottom of the tub using a 5/16 inch socket wrench. Pull the drain pump off the tub.
Step 7. Get a mutimeter, then turn the dial to ohms. Place the multimeter’s probes on each of the drain pump terminals. If you get a reading around 16, it indicates that the pump is working. If the reading is much lower or higher, you’ll need to replace the part.
Step 8. Once you’ve determined that the pump is working, mount the part back onto the tub, then secure it by applying the screws with your 5/16 inch socket wrench.
Step 9. Reconnect the wire harness to the drain pump. Reconnect the hose to the port on the pump assembly, then move the retaining clamp into place to secure the connection.
Step 10. Carefully lift the appliance back onto its feet (get someone to help you if needed). Peel the tape off the lid of your machine.
Step 11. Reattach the water inlet hoses to their corresponding ports on the cabinet (make sure the hoses are secured properly so water doesn’t leak).
Step 12. Connect the main drain hose to the port at the back of the cabinet. Use pliers to slide the spring clamp into place. Turn the water taps back on, then plug the cord back into the electrical outlet.

1. Control Panel (Front Loaders)
Follow the steps below to replace the control panel in your Whirlpool front loader washing machine…
Step 1. In order to prevent any chances of electrocution, ensure that your washing machine is disconnected from the power outlet before starting this procedure.
Step 2. Using a 1/4 inch socket wrench, take out the screws at the back of the machine holding the top panel to the cabinet. Pull the top off the machine and set it aside.
Step 3. Slide the soap tray out of the dispenser, then press the tab inside to completely release it. Loosen the screw next to the dispenser opening. With the 1/4 inch socket, take out the nuts at the top of the control panel.
Step 4. Pry the control panel off the front of the cabinet. Unplug the wire connector from the panel, then use needle-nosed pliers or a flat-blade screwdriver to release the wire retainer.
Step 5. With your 1/4 inch nut-driver, take out the screws holding the control panel to the housing. Pry the panel off the plastic housing, then discard it.
Step 6. Take your new washing machine control panel out of its packaging, then peel off protective wrapping.
Step 7. Place the new panel on the housing, then secure it by applying the screws with your 1/4 inch socket.
Step 8. Connect the wire harness to the new panel, then snap the retainer in. Mount the control panel assembly on the cabinet, then tighten the screws at the top using your nut-driver.
Step 9. Reapply the screw next to the dispenser opening, then slide the detergent tray back in. Place the top cover on the cabinet, then apply the screws at the back to secure it.
Step 10. Reconnect the appliance to the electrical outlet, then ensure that the issue has been fixed by running a wash cycle.
2. Push Button Pad (Top Loaders)
To replace the push button pad in your top loader Whirlpool washing machine, here are the steps you’ll need to take…
Step 1. Disconnect your appliance from the power source in order to avoid electrical damage.
Step 2. Insert a tool such as a putty knife underneath the two front corners of the control panel assembly (this should release the locking clips).
Step 3. Lift the control panel assembly and set it face-down on the cabinet. Unplug the switch wire connectors at the left side of the control panel (make sure to note where each connector goes).
Step 4. Disconnect the power cord’s wire connector from the control board. With a 1/4 inch socket, loosen the bolts holding the control board to the panel. Lift the control panel, then pull the main selector knob off the shaft.
Step 5. Lift the control board off the panel and set it aside. Pull the push button off the control panel.
Step 6. Using a putty knife, pry the push button pad off the control panel, then discard it.
Step 7. Prepare the new push button pad for installation by taking it out of its packaging. Peel the covers off the adhesive mounting strips on the new pad.
Step 8. Push the new button pad onto the control panel. Place the button onto the new pad.
Step 9. Place the main control board back on the panel, then apply the bolts to secure it. Lift the panel and snap the selector knob onto the shaft.
Step 10. Plug the switch wire connectors back in. Reconnect the power cord wire harness to the main control board.
Step 11. Lift the control panel assembly, then snap it back into the cabinet. Reconnect the appliance to the outlet, then try turning it on to see if the issue has been fixed.
